The Humane Society of Morgan County (HSMC) is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization located in Berkeley Springs, WV (EIN# 55-0594927). Our mission is to provide comfort, care and shelter to lost, homeless, and unwanted cats and dogs. We wish to educate our community about the programs and resources available and provide access to essential medical services for their pets, such as vaccinations and spay/neutering.

Incorporated in 1978, we have provided food, shelter, and medical support for cats and dogs either found as strays or surrendered by their owners in Morgan County and the surrounding area. We also work with the community in providing an ongoing Trap/Neuter/Return program to address the feral cat population in the county.

Because we are a No-Kill animal shelter, we receive ZERO funding from the State or County. We rely solely on donations, fundraising, and adoptions to sustain our facility. We employ three part time workers to provide the daily cleaning and feeding of our animals. All other tasks, which include the transportation of dogs and cats to medical facilities, providing for daily play time, facilitating adoptions, and supporting various fundraising events are accomplished by volunteers. The care we provide to our dogs and cats includes emergency medical treatment, routine spay and neuter, vaccinations, and testing for FIV/FeLV on our cats. Our medical bills account for a significant amount of our annual expenses.

HSMC accomplishes its mission by:

  • Operating a no-kill shelter for homeless cats and dogs
  • Finding suitable and safe new homes for the cats and dogs in our care
  • Providing spay/neuter services for any unaltered cats and dogs in our care, as well as essential vaccinations prior to adoption
  • Providing necessary medical care to keep the animals in our care healthy
  • Conducting vaccination clinics for owned pets in our community
  • Dispersing spay/neuter vouchers to community members to prevent the birth of unwanted dogs and cats
  • Working to prevent animal homelessness by providing access to these medical services and helping families in need feed their pets.
